I travelled with wardrobe designer Jody Tillen to meet my designer friends in Milan putting together what  was going to become an iconic look of the 80’s. Pastel soft outfits for Don Johnson and angular double breasted suits for Philip Michael Thomas. Two different personalities, two opposite clothing styles both working against the backdrop of the Miami South Beach color scheme. Strictly “ forbidden” were earth tones.

The “ Look” of the series struck a chord generating huge press in the US and Internationally.

MCA Universal which owned the series believed there was a market for a line of clothing marketed under the name “Miami Vice”. I was contacted by Victor Temkin, President of MCA and hired as a consultant to explore the feasibility of producing a men’s fashion line to mimic the stars wardrobes. Ultimately the line was not produced due to the practical difficulty or synching Television and Fashion seasons.

The demand for unstructured pink linen suits continued unabated for a couple of years. Athletes, gangsters and accountants kept coming to Madonna to get the look that had broken down cultural and class barriers. Clients who carried guns in a chest holster and claimed to be bail bondsmen had the jackets altered to accommodate the bulge of the gun.
